It all began in 1848, when Charles H. Alden founded the "Alden Shoe Company" in Middelborough, New England. Early on, the company specialized in custom-made men's shoes. All shoes are welted and have an excellent fit. The Aldens' specialty is Cordovan leather, a water-repellent, very soft and yet extremely hard-wearing leather from the hindquarters of horses. These precious pieces of leather are also known as shells. The elaborate production of a pair of Alden shoes takes four months. Anyone who has worn them once swears by their incomparable comfort.
